logistics ahead || No. 9

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear friends of intelligent logistics,

Trends and challenges of urban logistics have been high on the agenda of Fraunhofer IML for many years. Our expertise is now also in demand at MOBiLus (short for: Mobility for Liveable Urban Spaces), the new “EIT Urban Mobility”. Together with more than 40 partners from 15 countries in Europe, we launched the unique innovation network, now the eighth of its kind. In December last year, the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) voted our consortium the winner. “EIT Urban Mobility” is dedicated to accelerating solutions that improve our collective use of urban spaces, while ensuring accessible, convenient, safe, efficient, sustainable and affordable multimodal mobility. Its objective is to rethink urban spaces, overcoming fragmentation by integrating all urban mobility players – including cities and citizens – and increasing social inclusion and equality. We are proud and honoured to contribute to the vision of the city of the future with ideas and concepts for mobility and logistics of the future in Europe.

As always, you will find ideas for the logistics of the future in our newsletter “logistics ahead”. Employees of Fraunhofer IML but also representatives of our partners from industry or other scientific institutions from all over Europe report on innovative technologies and their application, explain research projects or programs, and bring you closer to the activities of our institute from their very personal perspective. The direct relation to the application is always at the forefront.

With the European initiative Logistics for Manufacturing SMEs, (L4MS), for example, we want to enable small and medium-sized enterprises to implement technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) or simulation – of course, in order to become more efficient and save costs. AI is a good key word: Fraunhofer IML is the partner of a new competence center for machine learning, which connects pioneering research institutions in Germany. As a result, our work in that area can be made available to small and medium-sized companies within the L4MS project. The great know-how of our institute in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises on their way to industry 4.0 has made ourselves interesting for Korea business: recently, two of our employees could encourage small and medium-sized enterprises to initiate innovative projects.
The establishment of a new “Enterprise Lab” at Fraunhofer IML, which is now the eleventh of its kind, shows how the digital transformation of economy can be taken a decisive step forward. In the “Trade Finance Innovations Lab”, the internationally operating Commerzbank is working together with our logistics specialists on solutions for digital banking alongside global supply chains. This shows how important logistics is today as a scientific discipline and as the backbone of the economy.
